Washago sits right at the top end of Lake Couchiching, about a 15 minute drive north of the City of Orillia. Known as the Gateway To Muskoka it is a very popular with cottagers and retirees alike. There is a complicated system of rivers that takes a bit of time to learn.
The main river is the Severn, most of which is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway. There is also the Black River and the Green River which are not connected to the system. Because of minerals and algae in the water, the Black River is actually black, the Green River is green. The interactive Google map we have here unfortunately doesn't show the rivers so we've included a more detailed map you can download here in PDF format.
In real estate listings you'll often see the phrase "23 miles of boating" which means that's how far you can go from end to end before you hit un-navigable waters. This restriction does limit property values but many find it an advantage. If you prefer canoeing or small pleasure craft you can have a pleasant day's outing with some beautiful scenery without a lot of boat traffic.
Washago is right on the edge of the Canadian Shield with its majestic rock formations. Here you can have a Muskoka-like environment without the Muskoka prices.
